My name is Jacqueline Malpica Davila. I am 46 years old. My life has never been sunshine and rainbows, but I have come a long way. At the age of 16, I had to leave school. At that time, you were not allowed to be in school if you were pregnant. After that, my life got more and more challenging. I thought I would never get to walk across a stage to receive a diploma. Decades later, I decided to enroll in an ESL class with Newport News Adult Education. After a lot of hard work, my English was strong enough to do more. Someone told me about an adult education program where I would receive a high school diploma upon completion of the program: the National External Diploma Program. Suddenly I felt there was an opportunity for me after all. I completed the program in 2017, and in August 2017, I got to walk across that stage! Then I knew there was more for me out there just waiting. I knew about Centura College, because two of my kids had attended previously. I didn’t think I was ready to take the next step. I kept telling my daughter that I wanted more. I wanted a college degree. We kept talking about it. Suddenly, I received a phone call from a Centura College representative. I looked at my daughter and quickly realized she had filled out a quick information guide online, and someone was calling within minutes. I decided to take the plunge. Now, here I am graduating with an Associate’s Degree in Business Management from Centura College. It has been tough. Sometimes, I thought about giving up, but my family kept pushing me. They told me how amazing it would feel to finally get to do something for me and only me. Now I get to graduate Suma Cum Laude. I did it!! I made it!!
Here I am standing tall as a college graduate!
